My name is Laura Rabenhorst and I have a Bachelor of Science from Northern Illinois University, Masters of Curriculum and Design from Olivet Nazarene University, and have taken numerous classes and workshops over the years to keep current with educational trends. I have been a teacher in Kenosha Unified for seventeen years and believe that the best tool we can pass along to our children is the gift of reading. I was recently listening to a radio program where the dj asked what one luxury item could you not live without. For me it definitely is my library card because reading is my passion. As Neil Gaiman points out in his speech to The Reading Agency in 2013, literacy is more important than ever. There is a great need to read and write, because becoming good global citizens children need to be able to read comfortably, comprehend what they are reading, understand nuance, and make themselves understood.
I strongly believe that in this age of technology children need these foundational skills to be successful. I am looking forward this year to sharing not only my love of reading but real life experiences that are brought into the classroom through our one-on-one ipads. Also, my husband, Mr. Rabenhorst, will be coming in and helping out with special building projects, the garden, and a presentation on Veterans Day.
I look forward to a fantastic school year.
