Students, Books And Reading
The Accelerated Reader program was started here at Grewenow in the 2nd quarter of the 1999-2000 school year. It is a technology-based program which combines literature with software which tests what the students have read. Students are first given a reading assessment test on a computer to determine their reading level. The test results allow us to place the students at an appropriate level of challenge. Each student chooses from books which are in his/her reading range. After the student has read the book, he/she takes a 5 or more question quiz on the book on a computer. The feedback is immediate and constructive. Most students really enjoy reading books and then taking quizzes on the computer. Most of all they love being successful. Many times this year students have said, "I used to hate to read but now I love it and read every day!"
Students at Grewenow now have access to the complete library of tests from Renaissance Learning. Parents can look up any book, whether it is in the Grewenow library or not, to see if there is an available test. If there is a test and it is in the student's appropriate level, they make take the test at school.
Reading practice is essential to becoming a better reader. Accelerated Reader is helping us motivate students to dramatically increase the reading of self-selected books within their reading range. This in turn will stimulate a love of reading itself ---- a love which will enrich a student's world for the rest of his or her life.
